THE PLEASURE OF DRINKING ORGANIC WINE
Welcome to the Enoteca Caratello’s, the first wine shop in Montepulciano dedicated to biological and biodynamic wines. Noted for its Vino Nobile and for the Sangiovese grape, Montepulciano is found in the southern part of the province of Siena, between the Val d’Orcia and the Val di Chiana.
Our wine bar offers a simple menu based on a selection of high quality products carefully researched for taste and authenticity. Dishes include various types of cheeses, salamis, breadsticks, salmon, marinated tomatoes and artichokes hearts in superior Tuscan extra virgin oil, olives and extra virgin olive oil.
THE CARATELLO
The history of the caratello is closely tied to that of the Tuscan Vinsanto, in fact the aging of this famous sweet wine takes place in small and precious wooden kegs called ‘caratello’. Traditionally the first phase of the Vinsanto production is the picking of the best grape bunches of the harvest and then drying them on straw mats. After they have been left to dry the grapes are pressed and the resulting must is placed in caratelli of various sizes, in general between 15 and 50 litres. Our Small Alternative Wine Shop takes its name from this celebrated object to tell the story of small wineries and great people.
Our staff is at your disposal to accompany our clients on an epicurean voyage of discovery of the most sought after and refined biological and biodynamic wines from all over the world.
MONTEPULCIANO
Montepulciano, known as the "Pearl of the Tuscan Renaissance", is a jewel of architectural beauty embedded between the Orcia and the Chiana Valleys. The city can be considered a poster of beauty: varying from religious edifices like the Temple of San Biagio (designed and built by Antonio da Sangallo the elder between 1518 and 1567), civic landmarks like the Town Hall by Michelozzo and an incomparable number of patrician palaces like those of continuing to the Contucci and Nobili-Tarugi families. We must not fail to mention the Griffin and Lion Well emblem of the city itself. The art treasures are kept in a number of churches (such as that of the churches of the Gesù, St. Agnes and St. Augustine), while curious architectural structures are located in various points of the historical centre (the Grain Loggia and the Pulcinella Tower).
The story of the city cannot be separated from the meeting between its thermal waters (found around 3km from the city, and that of the Montepulciano Spa) and its wine, the Vino Nobile. The entire province of Siena, in which Montepulciano is part of, is an area with a long tradition in winemaking. The Vino Nobile was one of the first Italian wines to obtain the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) in 1966 followed in 1980, by the superior label Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG).
